(Listen to "Flash in the Pan")

Flash in the Pan

You caught me half-smiling, a flash in the pan

A grin lost in styling, a laugh sounding canned

You fit the bill, you had the juice

We had some thrills, fast and loose

I had a sense we’d spend some time

No ropes, no fence, but now that I’m

Standing here, and saying this

Without a tear, but far from blissed

My muse prefers to shun restraint

And register this one complaint:

We’d only just started—we’d barely discussed

Our trust, open-hearted, when the lust bubble bust

Like a fairy just farted

The coulda-beens, the woulda-beens, the mighta-beens, that aren’t

No shoulda-beens, just wonderin’s:  Heat lightenin’?  Just sparks?

Is it better to have loved a lot, or focused on a few?

It is better to have loved and lost, and that will have to do.

You’re wonderful and passionate, and powerful, and kind

You’re beautiful.  Keep flashin’ it, but for now you’re on my mind.
